FREDERICK LILLYWHITE
The Guide to Cricketers

Manuscript copy of the sixth edition of 1853 in the hand of Thomas Padwick, 8vo., on 117 leaves of equal size to the printed edition, numbered according to the page numbers of the original and starting on p. 21, some ruling in red ink, bound with pp. 1-22 and the original front wrapper of the fifth edition of 1852, late 19th-century green half calf, bookplate of Charles Pratt Green.

A UNIQUE LABOUR OF LOVE. "Padwick was one of those who had to have everything, but he despaired of ever completing his set of Lillywhite's Guides, the one elusive volume -- the sixth edition -- evading him for so long that he borrowed a copy from a friend and actually copied out in his own hand, word for word, the entire minutely printed contents" (Irving Rosenwater, Cricket Books: Great Collectors of the Past, 1976, p. 8). The first 22 pages of the fifth edition presumably corresponded so closely to the sixth that they could be bound in with a saving on days of laborious copying. Allen 55; Smith 5 & 6; Padwick 1086.
