Lot Essay

The picture is to be compared with the Dune landscape in the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam (E.J. Sluyter, "Fredericus Theodorus (1778-?)", in Oud Holland, vol.88, pp.233/36, n05, fig.7). Similar are the group of trees in the centre, the subtle light grey-green colours and the sky. As pointed out by Sluyter, op. cit., this latter picture, probably dates from after 1815/20, when the brushwork became looser and the foliage more varied. The artist probably belonged to the group of topographical painters active in Amsterdam.
