Lot Essay

The naval ensign flying from Bergere's stern is that introduced immediately after the French Revolution in 1790 to replace the plain white ensign of the Bourbon monarchy. In turn replaced by the familiar tricolour in 1794, this distinctive and short-lived flag could have been used to give this work a precise dating had it not been inscribed 1793.
