The Marquis de Vauvray was one of the last patrons of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, celebrated philosopher, writer and composer of 18th century Romanticism. The gardens that he created at the Chateau d'Ermenonville were strongly influenced by Rousseau's philosophical and social ideas about the place of man in nature.
