Lot Essay

Chinnery, forced to move on from India owing to debts, landed in Macao in September 1825 and remained in China until his death in 1852. A variant drawing, with different architectural details, was exhibited London, Leger Galleries, English Watercolours and Drawings, 1986, as a view in Macao dating from the 1840s, and other variants are recorded, suggesting that Chinnery used the same formula to create several different finished works rather than to record a specific building.
