Annals of the Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta. Vol. VIII. The Orchids of the Sikkim-Himalaya. Calcutta: Printed at the Bengal Secretariat Press, 1898. Parts I - II (of IV, lacking III and IV) in one volume, and 145 lithographic proof plates within loose boards, 4° (355 x 280mm). Letterpress general title, part-titles, with that of part II in duplicate, general index to all 4 parts, 133 hand-coloured lithographic plates, 1 original watercolour of an orchid signed 'J.B.'. (The majority of plates with light spotting and staining, a few plates more heavily spotted and browned). Parts I-II unbound as issued in original printed portfolio (lightly rubbed).
UNIQUE COLLECTION OF PROOF PATTERN PLATES, WITH EXTENSIVE ANNOTATIONS AND CORRECTIONS BY KING AND PANTLING DATED 1894-1896. The proof plates include 81 plates from part II, 7 plates that were cancelled and never published in part II, and 57 plates that correspond to the general index and appeared in either parts III or IV, but are not present in the published work here. About one-quarter of the proof plates are partially hand-coloured, some of which with notes relating to their colouring, the plain plates with notes pertaining to strength of impression and correctness of illustration. The notes are often signed 'H.K.' or 'R.P.', with many plates containing notes from both, some simply annotated 'Approved'. Only 300 copies of the work were published.
