Lot Essay

The present lot combines a brightly coloured still life composition with a dramatically dark background. The objects disappear into the blackness, heightening the impact of the colours. Hunter introduced a dark background into his early works, and maintained this technique at times later in his career. Still Life (Dundee Art Gallery and Musem) for example, shows Hunter still using this combination of dark shadows and brightly lit still life objects in 1918.
