William Ward is best known for his engravings of the works of his younger brother James Ward the animal painter, and also his brother-in-law, George Morland. Primarily a print maker, William was encouraged to paint by Morland. This informal portrait is one of a number of portrait exchanges between the artists, and attests to the intimacy that existed between them.
