Lot Essay

In 1817, after studying under John Crome, Vincent moved to London where he studied at the British Institution. In 1820 he exhibited London from the Surrey side of Waterloo Bridge at The Society of Painters in Oil and Watercolours, for which the present picture appears to be a study. The exhibited picture was in the collection of Sir John Fleming Leicester Bt., of Tabley House, Cheshire by 1821, and was sold in his sale in these Rooms on 7 July 1827, lot 51 (65 gns.).
