GESSNER, Johannes (1709-1790) -- Catalogus librorum bibliothecae Johannis Gessneri...qui venales prostant apud J.H. Füssli Filium. Zürich, 1798.

8o (183 x 110 mm). Original grey wrappers.

A Swiss bookseller's catalogue, priced throughout in French Livres and Sols, of the extensive scientific library of Johannes Gessner (Gesner), a collateral descendent of the polymath Konrad Gessner and himself an outstanding botanist, mathematician, and physician, principal founder of the "Naturforschende Gesellschaft" in Zurich, friend of Boerhaave and Albrecht von Haller. "Gessner was undoubtedly one of the last of the great humanists" (DSB). The volume is also of interest for the history of the Swiss book trade: Johann Heinrich Füssli (1767-1821) was the son of Joh. (Hans) Heinrich Füssli (1745-1832), historian and statesman, and principal partner of the publishing and printing house of Orell Füssli, of which the Gessners were at that time also partners, and which exists to the present day. This appears to be the only catalogue of antiquarian books ever published by that house or its associates.
