An early study for the picture of the same format inserted in the ceiling of the neo-classical apartments of the Palazzo Ruspoli, Rome (M.T. Caracciolo, Giuseppe Cades, Paris, 1992, no. 52). The picture, of different composition, was commissioned by Prince Francesco Ruspoli on the occasion of his marriage to Isabella Giustiniani, which took place in Rome in 1781. The picture was finished by the 25 June 1782, and the artist was paid 120 scudi.
