Lot Essay

The decoration of this brushpot is typically in early Shunzhi style. The rocks are interestingly shaped, with the blue ranging from very pale to dark and intense, the flowers and leaves are extremely detailed with a nice work of shading.
The two poems read:
"It is late Autumn and the west wind blows listlessly,
Chongyang Festival is already here
but the chrysanthemums have yet to blossom to greet its arrival;

May I ask Mr Tao Yuanming, who just got back home,
Have you any clue when the flowers on the east fence will bloom fully? Among the delicate fragrance is my home,
with the Autumn wind blowing from all corners."
Such large brushpots were also used occasionally to hold scrolls.
