GRANT, Ulysses S. Autograph statement signed ("U. S. Grant"), n.p, n.d. 1 page, 8vo, small closed tear on crease below signature, slight remnants of mounting on verso. "I AM A REPUBLICAN": GRANT EXPLAINS HIS POLITICAL LOYALTY. "I am a republican as between the existing parties because it fosters the production of the field and farm and of manufacturies, and it encourages the general education of the poor as well as the rich."
This is classical Republicanism of the Lincoln era. Like Lincoln, Grant saw the Republicans as a truly national party, one geared to economic improvement, but not at the expense of the poor or the working class for the sake of the rich. By fostering development and encouraging education and social mobility, the Republicans would help all Americans rise out of poverty and become self-sufficient and prosperous. It was the philosophy Grant tried to follow as President, and this statement may have been created as part of his 1868 campaign.
