Lot Essay

Hamada was born in Ehime Prefecture and graduated from Kyoto Municipal University of Arts. He first exhibited in the United States in 1961; in 1965 Vincent Price included his work in the Chicago exhibition "Japanese Contemporary Artists." (Price [1911-1993], the "Master of Menace," was not only an avid collector and connoisseur but also art consultant to Sears, Roebuck and Company. Sears sold Japanese prints through a gallery in its Chicago store). Hamada now works in the more traditional Nihonga (Japanese painting) style.
