A PRESIDENT MOURNS FIRST LADY CAROLINE HARRISON: "I want to thank you most sincerely for the very simple and comfortable arrangements for the movement of our sad household from Washington to Indianapolis and return. You have always been very kind, and I assure you that the contributions you made to the comfort of my family during the summer...leave me always your Grateful Friends...."
Caroline Lavinia Scott Harrison (1832-1892), an accomplished artist, was active in many charitable organizations and served as first President General of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She oversaw the installation of electicity in the White House and in 1889 erected the first White House Christmas Tree. She succumbed to tuberculosis in October 1892. Funeral services were held in the East Room, interment was in Indianapolis, the trip mentioned in the present letter.
