In the J.K.Rowling story Harry Potter And The Philospher's Stone and the subsequent film, Harry's letter of acceptance to Hogwarts School is central to the plot. Orphaned as a baby, Harry is left with his mother's dull sister, Petunia Dursley, her unpleasant husband Vernon and their odious son, Dudley. They reluctantly house him in the 'cupboard under the stairs' and force him to live a life of drudgery in complete ignorance of his true origins. Harry is unaware of his 'magical' background until shortly before his eleventh birthday when a letter of acceptance arrives from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
