Lot Essay

(6) The portrait of Tischbein's daughter Angelika is preparatory to his painting of 1810 now in the Landesmuseum, Oldenburg (Mildenberger, 1986, no. 251). The sensitivity of the period looks back past Tischbein's theories of physiognomy to his early training as a portrait painter.
