HEATH, Dr. Benjamin (1739-1817) -- Catalogue of Books, containing all the Rare, Useful, and Valuable Publications, in Every Department of Literature, from the First Invention of Printing to the Present Time... sold without the least reserve. London: Mr. Edward Jeffery, 26 April 1810.
Large 8o (233 x 142 mm). The names of the 107 subscribers of the large-paper copies printed in red. Later half calf preserving contemporary marbled boards. Provenance: George Hibbert (inscription from the auctioneer); the fifth Baron Vernon (bookplate).
PRICED in a contemporary hand. PRESENTATION COPY OF THE LARGE-PAPER ISSUE, inscribed by Jeffery to George Hibbert of the sale catalogue of the library of the Rev. Benjamin Heath, one time headmaster of Harrow School, which included large parts of the library of his father Benjamin (1704-1766). The books were very well bound, and the binder is often mentioned in the descriptions, among them Roger Payne, Montagu, Johnson, Baumgarten, Walther, Kalthoeber; except for Montagu, they could only have been employed by Heath Junior, on account of their dates of activity. The sale, which provoked Dibdin to enthusiasm though its contents no longer belonged to Heath: he had sold it for £3,000 to two booksellers, Cuthell and Martin, who then, at a huge profit, had them auctioned by Jeffrey. This is the second issue, with the date of sale changed from 5 to 26 April, 1810, and the "Day of Sale" on pp. VII-X changed accordingly.
