Lot Essay

Owing to the advances in colour printing at the turn of the 20th Century, a flurry of books appeared on the market containing many colour reproductions of Allingham's trademark pictures. These publications introduced her watercolours to a wider audience, such as those who did not visit London galleries.

It is likely this watercolour resulted from a painting trip to Kent during the late 1890s. She visited the county on many occasions and painted numerous subjects ranging from coastal views, the North Downs, farmhouses and village scenes.

We are grateful to Annabel Watts for her help in preparing this catalogue entry.
