4° (285 x 230mm). List of subscribers, 28 hand-coloured lithographic plates, including frontispiece, by C. Shoesmith after James Henderson, printed by Hullmandel, 2 folding maps. (Some light browning or spotting, light offsetting visible in sky areas of a few plates.) Original blue cloth-backed paper boards, letterpress spine label (label worn with loss).
A RARE EARLY ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION OF HENDERSON'S WORK including plate 23 which was not included in the later ordinary edition for non-subscribers. Henderson embarked for Rio hoping to obtain a position with the British Government. The work offers some of the earliest examples of illustrations produced with the process of lithography. The views are made after Henderson's own drawings on the spot and they represent an important visual documentation of Brazilian history. Borba de Moraes, pp 334-35; Abbey, Travel, 706.
