Lot Essay

Henri Benner was at the Russian Court of St Petersburg between 1816 and 1828. Signed portraits by him depicting Constantin Iakovlevitch Bulgakov (1782-1835) dated 1821 and Empress Elizabeth Alexeyevna of Russia (1779-1826) dated 1823 are described and illustrated in the exhibition catalogue Historiia Rossii v Portretakh, Gosudarstvennyi Istoricheskii Musei, Moscow, 2010, nos. 71-72.
