Roger Cole comments on the present work, 'In return for his assistance in decorating his studio, and as a token of the friendship between them, Lovat Fraser gave Gaudier-Brzeska a book of entry passes to the London Zoo. As a result, numerous pen and crayon studies were produced of animals and birds, which in turn provided the stimulus for such sculptures as Gorilla. In this vigorous interpretation the composition and surface modelling are more important than accurate representation. The overall impression of the work is one of strength and assurance, qualities which were soon to be repeated in portrait heads early in 1913' (see R. Cole, loc. cit.).
