Lot Essay

HMS Cambridge (Lieutenant Kelly) was on the South American station in 1826 and was used by Captain Maling, senior British officer commanding on the station, to communicate with Bolivar (over the issue of British recognition) in the Andes. The artist Henry James was presumably mate on HMS Cambridge, the only British ship he includes in the present watercolour
