Lot Essay

Trentham Hall was rebuilt for the 2nd Duke of Sutherland by Sir Charles Barry between 1833 and 1842. The new house was Italianate in style and later formed the pattern for Prince Alberts' Osborne on the Isle of Wight. The large lake on the south side of the house was originally laid out to a design by Capability Brown of 1759. An extensive Parterre by W.A. Nesfield linked the House and lake. Between 1910 and 1912 the main body of the house was demolished. The Parterre and Lake survive together with a number of buildings in the grounds including Charles Heathcote Tatham's famous Mausoleum.
