Lot Essay

The sitter was the daughter of King James II of England and Ireland and VII of Scotland (see next lot) and his first wife, Anne Hyde. She married, in 1677, her cousin William III and they reigned as King and Queen of England, Ireland and Scotland from 1689 until her death in 1694 when William became sole ruler.
