The portrait of James II by Lely from the collection of George Vansittart at Bisham Abbey was sold Christie's, London, 30 July 1982, lot 7. A portrait by Lely and studio which relates to the present miniature is in the Royal Collection (RCIN 405673).
Two further miniatures by Henry Pierce Bone after Lely's portrait of James II in the collection of George Vansittart at Bisham Abbey are known. These include a rectangular version by Henry Bone, signed and dated June 1831, now in the Royal Collection (RCIN 422387) and a smaller, oval, head and shoulders version by Henry Pierce Bone, dated June 1845 was sold Christie's, London, 24 June 1975, lot 68. A copy by William Bone, signed and dated 1833, was sold Sotheby's, London, 18 October 1971, lot 69 (see V. Remington, Victorian Miniatures in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, London 2010, I, p. 75). The corresponding preparatory drawing by Henry Bone, dated April 1831, is in the National Portrait Gallery, London (inv. no. NPG D17191).
