Ryland worked as a decorator and a designer, in addition to being a painter. The present watercolour and lot 40 are typical examples of his work and style, which is a combination of the classicism of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) and the aestheticism of Albert Moore (1841-1893). He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1890 onwards.
