Details
HERBERT GEORGE PONTING (1871-1935)

The British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913: An album containing 442 silver gelatin contact prints by Ponting and others, [1910-1913], oblong 2°, 123/8 x 17¾in. (31.3 x 45cm.). 51 grey-card leaves (50 with prints mounted recto and verso, 1 mounted recto only), the prints 5 x 7in. (12.7 x 17.8cm.) and smaller, each with typed number and title on mounted slip beneath. (Most with very slight fading to extremities.) Original grey cloth by Raines & Co. of Ealing (extremities lightly rubbed).

A FINE SELECTION OF MOST OF THE GREATEST IMAGES FROM SCOTT'S LAST EXPEDITION , THE MAJORITY BY PONTING.
The numbers which begin the typed title labels beneath each print refer to Ponting's numbering of all the photographs that were taken during the expedition. The date of assembly of the album cannot be given with any certainty, but, given certain similarities between it and the album belonging to Evans sold in these rooms, 17 September 1999, lot 252, it seems likely that it was assembled by Ponting at a similar date.
