Hermitage, La Chapelle--Vintage 1959
Rhône. Domaine-bottled: Paul Jaboulet Aîné
Reconditioned at Paul Jaboulet Aîné in 2009. Pristine appearance. New capsules and labels. All levels 3cms or better below base of corks. In new six-bottle Paul Jaboulet Aîné wooden cases
Tasting Note: I have had a half-dozen bottles of 1959 La Chapelle, and have always rated it in the upper nineties. At the Jaboulet tasting, it appeared to be more evolved, with a saturated garnet color, and a big, cedary, meaty, dried herb-scented bouquet with abundant smoke and spice. In the mouth, alcohol was burning its way through the flavors, and one could clearly see this wine was the product of an extremely hot, sunny year. Lusty, fully mature, but becoming disjointed, with the fruit fading and the alcohol and tannin taking over, this remains an outstanding wine, but I am convinced that pristine bottles are far better than this showing, and should be drunk over the next decade. In this condition, the wine requires immediate consumption. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #129, June 2000
