HIGGINS, Bryan (1741-1818). Observations and Advices for the Improvement of the Manufacture of Muscovado Sugar and Rum. St Jago de la Vega: Alexander Aikman, 1797-1800.

PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION; AN EARLY JAMAICAN IMPRINT. Born in County Sligo, Higgins trained as a doctor in Leiden and set up a school of practical chemistry in London in 1774. Having invented cement in 1779, he was later employed by the House of Assembly in Jamaica to improve the properties of sugar and rum. The present work, with explanatory diagrams, is the result of his experiments made in Spanish Town from 1797 to 1799. Cundall, Bibliographia Jamaicensis, 503.
