An unusual trio of documents relating to this important English artist and printmaker, including a rare signed subscription form, recording a subscription for John Palvies to three (of four) prints in the series entitled The Election. Hogarth certifies that Palvies has tendered "...the first Payment for three Prints representing the Polling for Members of Parliament...Which I Promise to deliver when finished." In 1735 Hogarth had successfully persuaded Parliament to pass the Engraver's Copyright Act," to protect popular printmakers from piracy. A summary of the law is proudly engraved in two columns beneath the large vignette. Autograph material of this artist is RARE. (3)
