HORATIO, VISCOUNT NELSON (1758-1805)

Autograph letter signed ('Bronte Nelson') to 'Capt [Alexander] Ball Chief of the Maltese', Palermo, 19 November 1799, one page, 4to, on a bifolium, docketed on verso of blank by recipient (slight stain to lower right margin).

The arrival at Malta of a Russian envoy: 'The Chev[alie]r Italinki will be with you in a few days ... He is the second Minister from the Emperor of Russia to this Court ... thro' whom every thing relative to the Fleet & army passes. He has a proclamation to publish at a proper time, you knew him I believe at Naples he is an old acquaintance of Sir William [Hamilton]'s'. The letter also refers to the impending dispatch of troops of the three powers (Russia, Great Britain and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies) to Malta, and the possibly restoration of the Order of St John.

Sir Alexander Ball (1756-1809), one of Nelson's Nile captains aboard the Alexander, had at this time assumed the presidency of the Maltese 'national congress' in the insurrection against the French; he was subsequently to be the island's de facto governor from 1803 until his death in 1809. Nelson was at Palermo in attendance both on the King and Queen of the Two Sicilies, and on Lady Hamilton -- 'making himself ridiculous with Lady Hamilton and idling his time at Palermo when he should have been elsewhere', as Lord Keith put it.
