In 1888, Colonel Harry McCalmont inherited an immense fortune from a great uncle. His next 14 years were dedicated to enthusiastic spending, through which his outgoings included a yacht, a house in St. James's Square, and the Cheveley Park Estate near Newmarket, where he pulled down the old house and erected a giant mansion in its place (the frame is made out of some the wood from the house).

In between such activities, he managed to find the time of become Newmarket's Member of Parliament, as well as stablishing steeplechasing there (the Links course). By his death he had made his way through half of his £4 million inheritance.
