Lot Essay

During the 1970s, Dalwood was involved with a number of commissions for the Middle East in collaboration with the architect Tom Hancock. Dalwood made a large silver relief for the palace of an Arab sheikh in Abu Dhabi and the design was selected from these four maquettes which depict the desert landscape in various forms. Chris Stephens comments, 'Desert, Rocks and Wind appears to derive from the formation of the morphology of the desert by the action of the elements on the land' (C. Stephens, The Sculpture of Hubert Dalwood, Much Hadham, 1999, p. 72).
