We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD for the attribution. Van Westhoven's rare still lifes all depict similar themes, of Delft ware, Venetian glasses and fruit on a marble table covered with a carpet. In subject matter and execution his work is related to that of Barent Vermeer and Juriaen van Streek (see W. Bernt, The Netherlandish Painters of the Seventeenth Century, III, 1970, p. 137). Another work by the artist was sold by the New York Historical Society, Sotheby's, New York, 12 January 1995, lot 50 ($55,000).
