HUTTEN, Frowin von (d.1528). Autograph letter signed ('Frowin von Hutten') to Graf Wilhelm IV von Henneberg-Schleusingen, n.p. [?Landshut], 'sambstag nach lucyen' [16 December] 1503, one page, 4to (some pencil markings, upper margin trimmed), integral address panel. Provenance: Stargardt sale, 17 November 1999, lot 1012; the Albin Schram Collection. Written on the eve of the Landshut war of succession, regarding a diplomatic mission, and mentioning the efforts of Duke Albrecht IV of Bavaria to recruit mercenaries for the imminent conflict: 'ewer gnad haben mir Hans Fuxen halb schreiben lasßen in aller untherdenigkeit hab ich gelesßen und wil den jhen schreiben mit den ich solcher bestellung halb geredt hab daß ich mich genzlich vorsehe sie werden ein fyrzehn dag ein beiddungen haben wie wol ich weiß daß etlich von Herzogs Albrechst wegen umb dienst ersucht sein ...'. The Landshut war of succession occurred at the death without heir male of Duke George of Bavaria-Landshut in 1503: the duchy was claimed by Duke Albrecht IV of Bavaria-Munich in accordance with an agreement between the two branches of the Wittelsbach line, whereas Duke George had named as his heir his daughter Elisabeth (to whose party the recipient of the present letter adhered). The war ended at her death in 1505, and the duchy was partitioned.
