Lot Essay
Isaac Israels traveled frequently through Italy in the 1920's, often in the company of his girlfriend, Sophie de Vries. One of his favourite subject matters in Italy were the popular beach resorts such as the Lido in Venice and the mundane resort of Viareggio, where he painted bathers on the beach in the strong sunlight of the Mediterranean. Mostly, these bathers were ladies dressed in swimsuits, posing for the painter or reclining on the beach.
Looking out over sea, the aristocratic-looking girl depicted in this lot is sitting elegantly on a stretcher. The sunlight gently touches her right shoulder and leg. This gives her plasticity, which is contrasted to the flat treatment of the sea and beach. The modern clothing of the sunbather reveals Israels' interest in fashion. During his whole career he painted elegantly dressed women and models. In the present lot the headband and shoes, but especially the girl's kimono are the eye-catchers. The kimono is loosely draped over her shoulders and is dashed with spots of colour, contrasting with the white towel on her stretcher.
We wish to thank Mr J. van Roosmalen for kindly confirming the
authenticity of the present lot on the basis of a colour photograph.
