Lot Essay

Leopoldo II, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1797-1870), only surviving son of Ferdinando III, Grand Duke of Tuscany and his wife, Maria Ferdinanda de Chatal, married Leopoldina (1799-1832), daughter of Prince Maximilien of Saxony in 1817 and had issue. He married secondly Maria Antoinetta (1814-1898), 4th daughter of Francesco I, King of the Two Sicilies and had issue. During Leopoldo's reign 1824-1859 the Duchy of Lucca was reunited to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany on 4 October 1847. He abdicated in favour of his eldest son Ferdinando on 21 July 1859.
