Lot Essay

A typical scene by Russia's greatest seascape artist. Born in Feodosia in the Crimea of Armenian ancestry, Aivazovskii was a pensioner of the Academy of Arts and sent to western Europe to broaden his studies. In 1842 in italy he met J.M.Turner, who was so impressed by the younger artist's talent that he composed a poem in his praise.
