Nicholas I (1796-1855), Tsar of Russia 1825-1855, in black uniform with gold epaulettes, wearing the blue moiré sash and breast-star of the Imperial Russian Order of St Andrew, the Russian Military Order of St George, the breast-star of the Imperial Order of St Vladimir encircled by the British Order of the Garter, the Prussian medal for Distinguished Service and the 1812 campaign medal

on ivory
oval, 2¾ in. (45 mm.) high, pierced gilt-metal easel-stand frame, the silver-gilt reverse engraved 'Given to C. A. Murray. by H.I.M. Nicolas. Emperor of Russia. at Buckingham Palace June 9t.h. 1844'

According to the inscription on the frame, given to C.A. Murray by the Emperor during a State Visit to London in 1844.

A miniature of Friedrich Wilhelm, King of Prussia (1795-1861) in a similar frame, presented to C.A. Murray by the sitter at Buckingham Palace on 4 February 1842, was sold Christie's, London, 7 December 2004, lot 192.
