Lot Essay

Born in Pretoria, Jacob Hendrik Pierneef moved to Holland with his family and attended the art academy in Rotterdam. At the end of the Anglo-Boer War in 1902, the family returned to Pretoria, where Pierneef studied under the tutelage of the painter Frans Oerder. Fascinated by the South-African countryside Pierneef's primary theme was landscape; only seldom did he paint still-lifes or the human figure. The stylized, isolated forms of the trees in his landscapes can be seen as symbols of human life in Pierneef's silent and ordered vision of nature.
