Dr. Karel Fauser was one of the first collectors of the work of Jan Dibbets. During the mid sixties Dibbets lived for a short time in Enschede, which brought the two into close contact. Although Dibbets work is mostly based on photography, in his early development he painted large canvasses. Inspired by American hard-edge painting, he constructed shaped canvasses with plane bright colour fields (lot 100-102).
In 1967, after visiting the St Martin's school of Art in London, ground and earth became his new medium. Grass was cut in a square and positioned in a new composition and then photographed (lot 104). This sort of experiment led to his famous Perspective corrections. His later works have their roots in the ideas he developed in these years (lot 103).
