The Douai born artist took his apprenticeship with Alexis Simon Belle (1674-1734). In 1731 he entered the Royal Academy in Paris and from 1738 onwards he exhibited at the Paris and Brussels salons. He was highly praised for his skills in portraiture by his contemporaries, and he was appointed court painter by King Louis XV in 1744. In 1760 he became a teacher at the Royal Academy in Paris (G. Wildenstein, Le Peintre Aved, sa vie et son oeuvre, 1922, II, pp.181/9).
