Robaut (op. cit.) notes that Corot executed the present work in the company of Constant Dutilleux, one of his closest friends. The two artists are known to have travelled up the Northern French coast together on an extended painting trip in September 1857, although the wispy trees in the foreground suggest that the present work was probably painted in springtime.
An inveterate traveller, and frequent visitor to the Dutilleux's family home in Arras, in Northern France, Corot was enamoured with the silvery light of the Channel coast. Markedly different to the bolder, more startkly lit paintings of Corot's earlier Italian period paintings, in its softness of mood and subtlety of composition, the present work is typical of the artists's landscape interpretations of the period.
