Lot Essay

An accompanying note inscribed in French by the artist explains that the portrait is being sent to the sitter's mother to avoid further delay in delivering it in person. He states that he has done his best to capture the beauty of her daughter in the drawing and gives his sincere wishes to them both:
'Madame forcé de remettre de jour en jour l'honneur de vous porter moi même le portrait de Mademoiselle, je prend le parti de vous l'envoyer ; afin de ne pas vous faire attendre plus longtems. vous verez, j'ai fais de mon mieux pour aprocher autant que possible de la beauté du modele. recevez avec bienveillance Madame le profond respect de votre très humble serviteur Isabey Je presente mes homages respectueux à Mademoiselle' (exact transcription)
The note is further inscribed, 'Letter receiv'd from Isabey [...] on sending my portrait which had been at the Louvre 1835 EMFG [...]'
