Lot Essay

A sketch of an Assumption on the verso of a sheet in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lille shows a composition similar to that of the present drawing, A. Schnapper, Jean Jouvenet et la peinture d'histoire à Paris, Paris, 1974, no. 175, fig. 176. The recto of the Lille drawing is connected with the Repas du Christ chez Simon le Pharisien dated 1699 and presented at the Salon in the same year.
Jouvenet also painted, after 1713, an Assumption, though of a rather different composition for the chapel of the château de Voysseaux, Schnapper, op. cit., no. 140, fig. 159.
Two more drawings of this subject were mentioned in the 18th Century sale catalogues: in Mariette's as lot 1273, 'L'Assomption de la Vierge: charmante composition pleine d'esprit, à la pierre noire, rehaussée de blanc', and in Le Brun's on 23 December 1775, lot 67.
