DOMAINE JEAN GRIVOT
At the end of the eighteenth century, just before the French revolution, Joseph Grivot sold his vineyards in the Hautes-Côtes to settle in Vosne-Romanée. His son, Gaston, is credited with developing the Grivot Domaine. In 1919, Gaston had the foresight to sell vines in lesser areas in order to buy a large parcel of the famous Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot. The upper end of this 1.86 hectare strip adjoins Château de la Tour and remains one of the Domaine’s most important holdings. Gaston Grivot was one of the first to earn an oenology degree from the University of Dijon in the 1920’s, followed by his son Jean, a few years later. Together they made their wines, from Nuits-Saint-Georges and Clos de Vougeot, among the finest in the Côte d’Or and the Grivot name became one of the most famous in the wine world.
