According to Professor Ackerman, this picture is datable to circa 1880.

The present work is an oil sketch for the previously untraced picture of circa 1874-7, sold in these Rooms, 26 June 1987, lot 74. There is a further oil sketch in the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design (Ackerman, op. cit.), as well as a charcoal study of the same subject which was also sold in these Rooms, 10 February 1995, lot 140.
