For the attribution, see the pair of capriccios sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, 6 May 1998, lot 148, which, like the present work, show the influence of Giovanni Paolo Panini on the artist. Harms' interest in ruins and perspective is shown by a series of nine engravings from 1678 and later by his activity as a stage designer in Dresden.
