Lot Essay
The present lot forms part of a small group of beach scenes by the Hague School artist Johannes Bosboom, who is better known for his church interiors. These beach scenes were mainly executed in 1873, when he stayed with the Van Tienhoven family in Villa Erica on the Scheveningseweg and later that year in the Scheveningse hotel Zeerust. From there he made several walks to the fishing-village and to the beach where he made various sketches. The present lot, probably executed in 1873, may be compared to the drawing 'Het strand te Scheveningen', Rijksprentenkabinet Amsterdam, formally belonging to the collection of M.P. Voûte, Amsterdam and F. Lugt, Paris, inv. nr. 6820). The subject is most related to H.W. Mesdags' beach scenes, but Bosboom's works are distinguished by their complex spatial point of view.
